Weekend Getaways are held twice a year for people with Down syndrome and other chromosomal disorders for people aged 18 years and over. These are held in either February or March at Adelaide Beachfront, Semaphore Park, and then in October or November at Adelaide Shores, West Beach. Getaways are held from Friday evening to late Sunday afternoon.
Getaway itineraries include going out for a meal, attending an event (eg. sporting match, theatre production) and general leisure activities typical of a weekend away. Like camps, getaways also provide the opportunity for social skill development as well as respite for parents. Many participants have been attending these weekend getaways for a number of years so it is often a chance for close friends to ‘catch up’ and spend a whole weekend together.
The camps are supervised by Laura Millbank, Life Ed, Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator, with Deb Green Life Ed Support Officer, and a number of volunteer leaders. The ratio of leaders to participants is 1:4.
