Other Recreation Activities
Bowling
Bowling nights are held on the first Friday of the month at the Cross Road Bowl (Goodwood) and are open to members of the Society who are 10 years or age and older.
The aim of this activity is to assist young people with Down syndrome to:
- facilitate development of a friendship network
- utilise an age appropriate leisure activity
- become independent by providing opportunities to make decisions and manage their bowling group
Bowling times are:
- 7:30 – 9:00pm for people 10 –14 years of age
- 8:00 – 10:00pm for people 15 years of age and older.
Staff from the Society provides supervision at the Bowling centre from 7:15pm to 10:15pm with parents being responsible for the participants outside of these times. Prompt drop off and pick ups are requested and any alternative pick up arrangements need to be conveyed to the supervisors (eg. being picked up in a taxi, going home with a friend etc).
Parents are discouraged from attending with their son/daughter to promote greater independence and socialising opportunities. During the year one or two informal coffee evenings are organised for parents/caregivers.
Twice a year bowlers are given the opportunity to get together for dinner prior to bowling. Over the years staff supervisors have seen many adult bowlers arrive early after work and meet with their friends to have dinner at the centre on a regular basis.
Check out the Leisure & Rec photo gallery for some bowling style.
